Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis) is on the Neglected Infection of Poverty list in the United States as it disproportionately affects individuals who live in poverty in that country. It is also endemic in Latin America where it mostly affects rural and poor populations. This disease does not transmit through casual contact between people or between humans and animals.
The insect vector, or triatomine bug, spreads the infectious parasite to humans and animals when it bites and sucks blood.
The administration of antiparasitic therapy will lead to a microbiologic cure; however, the physician must know which patients should receive those medications. In general, drug therapy is necessary for patients who are still in the acute phase of the disease. Even though the chronic phase of this disease is silent or without symptoms, the infection can reactivate later in life during that phase.
