Nebuchadnezzar II was the most powerful of all the ancient Babylonian kings. The eldest son of King Nabopolassar, founder of the Chaldean dynasty of Mesopotamia, Nebuchadnezzar was born in 636 BC. Reigning from 605 to 562 BC, Nebuchadnezzar, an astute military man and prolific builder, was the world’s first world ruler.

Nebuchadnezzar – The Builder

Nebuchadnezzar was a great builder and appears to have built or rebuilt nearly every city and temple in the country. Nine-tenths of all the bricks found amid the ruins of Babylon bear his name. Special emphasis was placed on his temples and shrines to the gods, particularly Marduk, Nebo and Zarpinat. His building feats also included canals, aqueducts and reservoirs the likes of which had never been seen before. Around his capital city he constructed a double wall ten miles long with an elaborate entry call the Ishtar gate.

Many of his inscriptions contain detailed accounts of his building projects and the same question, “Is this not the great Babylon which I have built?” is recorded multiple times. He is perhaps best known for his legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Numerous clay tablets and ancient texts speak of his abundant achievements and prideful character.
