What Is The Highest Capital City In The World

Australian Aboriginal society has the longest continuous cultural history in the world. It is believed the people crossed the sea from South-east Asia around 50,000 years ago and within a few thousand years they had populated what we know today as Australia . Skip ahead over the centuries and in the 1800s Australia was being ‘discovered’ by colonists: the Dutch, French and English. France and Holland apparently did not think this hot and barren land was worth exploring, then along came Matthew Flinders, a young British naval officer, who undertook the difficult job of charting huge unknown areas of the Australian coastline. In 1802 he mapped the entire South Australian coast.

History of Adelaide, South Australia

Long before the European colonists moved into the area known today as Adelaide, it was inhabited by a peaceful group of Australian Aborigines known as the Kaurna. They were a small group whose culture and language was almost completely destroyed within a few decades of the European settlement of South Australia in 1836.

The main reason for a British settlement in Australia was to provide a place of punishment where convicts could be sent. Unlike the first ‘settlers’ who landed in in Sydney in 1788, the early British people in Adelaide were not convicted criminals deported from England, often for crimes as little as stealing a loaf of bread. They were free settlers who were Adelaide-bound in the hope of finding a better life.
